Day Two – Schenectady NY to Rockland ME
Miles: 377

We started with Breakfast at a little burrito place across the street. It wasn't raining as we headed out but it was foggy and misting. Not a great start but the weather forecast didn't show much rain for the day. Adding to the less than great start was my headlight was not working. It was fine when we pulled in the night before, but now it was not working. The bike automatically uses one of the high beams as a replacement but it is not that great. The bike being only a little more than a year old left me feeling rather disappointed to say the least. We stopped to gas up and headed towards Troy where we would link up with NY130 and eventually Plank Road. In Berlin we headed north on NY22 following the Little Hoosic River. Soon we crossed over into Vermont and we stopped at the Bennington National Monument. The 300 foot obelisk was built in 1887 to commemorate the Battle of Bennington which was actually fought in nearby NY. It was here that General John Stark's New Hampshire men defeated detachments of General Burgoyne's Redcoats. President Benjamin Harrison travelled here for the dedication. We headed due north through the Green Mountain National Forest and moved further east finally crossing over into NH and following the Connecticut River north to the Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge. We crossed over the old lady back into VT and once across we stopped at the Harpoon Brewery for lunch. Wings were again the selection and did not disappoint. The weather had produced a very nice day and we were riding in the sunshine. After lunch we stopped at the Willard Twin Covered Bridges just a few short miles from Harpoon. We still had over 200 miles to ride and it was already 1:30, so we decided to ride for a couple of hours without stopping to make up some time. We finally stopped near Ossipee Lake in Maine at the Berry Bay Dam. It wasn't much but it was a nice break and very isolated. It was getting close to 7:00 by the time we reached Wiscasset ME where we stopped at Reds Eats for the best Lobster Roll we have ever had. It was expensive but well worth it. We sat outside on their small street-side deck overlooking the Sheepscot River and enjoyed the scenery and the great food. We moved on toward Roackland and our hotel. We stopped in Waldoboro to get some beer for the night and we made a last stop at the car wash just next to the hotel to wash off the bikes. It was 8:30 by the time we reached the hotel so we decided to call it a night. The weather ended up not being that bad. We enjoyed the Harpoon Brewery for lunch and the Lobster Roll at Reds made a perfect ending to the day.
