Day Three – Rockland ME to Moncton NB
Miles: 433
We had gone to bed the night before as it was lightly raining and when we awoke to start our day there was no change. Nothing is worse than starting the day in the rain. It wasn't a downpour or even rain really, rather it was just a constant mist. We knew we had a big day in front of us with lots to see so we headed into town and were sitting for breakfast by 6:30 and on our way shortly after 7:00. My headlight was still not working and the foggy conditions made that even more concerning today. We headed north on US1 and hoped to stop at the Camden Overlook but with the fog there was really no point. We continued toward our next destination which was the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Fort Knox. We had planned to get a picture of the new bridge in the same exact spot we had stopped back in 1994 but the fog was so dense it was not possible. We stopped at the bridge and took a few pics but the fog made it less than optimal. We then went over to the entrance to Fort Know only to learn that it was not yet open. So, on to Bar Harbor we went. By the time we reached the park the weather had cleared and while it was still slightly overcast the fog had disappeared. In the park we stopped at Sand Beach and Thunder Hole before going up Cadillac Mountain. As we approached the top the line of cars waiting to get in the top parking lot was very long, so we turned around and still managed to stop at some of the key overlooks. It was after noon and we needed to stop for something to eat so we hit the Atlantic Brewing Company for some more wings and beer. This was a very nice place with good beer and good wings. We got moving and stopped in Machias for gas and visited the Bad Little Falls Park right next to the station. There was previously some sort of mill there that was no longer in existence. The park had a nice wooden deck overlooking the falls and we stayed there for 10 minutes or so before continuing on towards Canada. As we approached Whiting where we were to break away from US1 to catch the ferries bypassing the Calais/St Stephen border crossing it was already 4:00 so we decided to continue and catch the ferries on the way back. After crossing the border we made it a straight shot to Moncton. We got our signals crossed up and ended up downtown rather than in the northern section where the Hampton is. It was later when we arrived so we stayed at the hotel and had a few drinks in the lobby.
