Miles: 440
Daybreak Cafe was our starting spot at 7:00 just north of the hotel. Our first stop was just 25 miles north on MI 25 at the Port Salinac Lighthouse. The lighthouse, built in 1886 is not on a large amount of property, and sits in a little neighborhood area. We jumped off our bikes took a couple of pics and were on our way. We continued up MI 25 and in an hour we were at Port Aux Barques Lighthouse. This lighthouse was built in 1848 and now sits within a county park. The museum looked like it would be good, but it was closed for Covid reasons. There were a few others walking around but we were mostly by ourselves. We continued on MI 25 frequently riding with the water in view. We headed into Bay City where we got on the interstate to get us on the other side of Saginaw Bay, and back to riding along the shore. We were now riding on US 23 along Lake Huron and we stopped at Tawas Point Lighthouse. It was very crowded here as there is a nice beach. We had some snacks for lunch as we stood on the beach. The lighthouse was quite a distance away and we didn't take the time to walk over to it. Continuing on US 23 we rode along the coast and stopped at 40 Mile Point Lighthouse. This was one of the better lighthouse locations for the day. In addition to having a nice looking lighthouse it also has the old pilot house of the SS Calcite on display as a type of museum. The SS Calcite was a bulk freighter typically hauling Iron Ore. It was decommissioned in 1961 and the pilot house was sent here. The Port of Calcite is nearby and I guess that is why the lighthouse received the pilot house. After a short 30 miles we were in Cheboygan and stopped at the Cheboygan Brewing Co for a quick beer. The place was very busy but we managed a seat on the rooftop. It was an enjoyable Sunday afternoon as we relaxed with a cold one. However it was approaching 5:00 and we knew we had some more riding to do. We had planned to continue riding up US 23 but we opted to jump on I-75 and make a fast run up to the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse. We had been through the area many times but never stopped at this lighthouse. We took a couple of pics and we were off. We could tell the rain was coming so we made a little shortcut over to the West coast and headed south. We needed gas so we stopped at Cross Village to fill up before heading down the tunnel of trees, but no more did we pull out of the gas station than the rain hit us. We bypassed the tunnel of trees in 2014, and now when we took the time to ride through we could hardly see anything with the rain. It wasn't a total loss, and we could tell it would've been nice. Maybe we'll have another chance. No more stopping as we headed towards Petosky. We were targeting Beards Brewery and when we arrived we had to wait in line, but it turned out to be well worth it. The wings were top notch and the beer was also good. Beards is basically in the downtown area and it looked really nice, and we wished we could have walked around but it was still drizzling and well after 8:00, so we took the short ride to the hotel and called it a night. Due to our frequent stops it was difficult to fit in the 440 miles, but had it not rained it still would have been darn good.
