Day Five – Raleigh NC to Waynesboro VA
Miles: 304

We chose Flying Biscuit for breakfast which was a little pricey and also a little hipster, but despite that it was very good. We had to ark our through Raleigh which was pretty uneventful riding through the suburbs. We rode around the West side of Camp Butner going up Range Road but we did see any activity on the shooting range. Our first stop of the day was 73 miles out on the NC/VA border on the Dan River. Nothing more than a gravel parking lot but we were not going to have another opportunity until we reached Appomattox Courthouse although we did ride through Brookneal VA where Patrick died and was buried in 1799 at his Red Hill Plantation. When we did arrive to the National Park where the end of the Civil War was formalized we stopped to walk around and see the historical buildings. We hadn't been here since 1996, so it was enjoyable for us. The weather had gotten nice and it was a perfect fall day. We didn't spend a whole lot of time but we had our fill and moved on into nearby Lynchburg. We stopped for lunch at Three Roads Brewing Company which was located in an old Ford dealership and had a really nice 1950s feel. There was a large picture of the building as a Ford dealership back in the 1950s on the wall that was really great to look at. We tried as best we could to duplicate the picture. There was also an Esso Gas Station next door to the dealership which was still there but now vacant. We sat outside in front of the building. We rode through the old part of town trying to get a glimpse of the old historic homes but you really couldn't see much from the street. We followed the James River for a time before turning onto the Blue Ridge Parkway. We rode for about 20 miles before turning onto US60 and riding down the mountain to connect with VA778 and VA151 which is aptly named Patrick Henry Highway for a period of miles. The road up towards I-64 is really nice and one that we have recently ridden. We stopped at Brewing Tree Beer Co. which we had bypassed the last time through. We had dinner and sat outside listening to a pair of singers that I hate to say were really quite bad. After dinner before riding to the hotel we stopped at Basic City Beer Co which was another place we had bypassed the last time through. After a quick rinse at the carwash we hit the hotel. There was not any place around the hotel. so we just picked up a few beers at the Shell station next door and drank them in the lobby.
