Fall to the New River area
We were able to get a fall ride in this year after having done a spring ride; no small victory. We chose the New River area in a bit of a nod to our 1996 trip
We rode along the Ohio for a time before going up through the Hocking Hills area and stopping in Vinton OH to view the Swinging Bridge there. The bridge was built in 1990 on an old abutment from a covered bridge burned down by John Morgan and his Raiders during the Civil War. We rode back down to the river and stopped dat the Belleville Locks and Dam. Once you have been to one set of locks on the Ohio they all pretty much look the same. After crossing the river we ran along US 60 and followed the Kanawah River where we stopped at the Kanawah Falls. The Falls are not very high but they make up for that by being very wide. It is difficult to see the far side form the road but one can the western side quite well and a good view of the old power house. We continued on to the New River Gorge area and stopped at our old camping spot from our 1996 trip. We wouldn't go that route anymore but it was fun trying to identify the old spot. We crossed the old shell bridge that was closed back in 1996 and has since been refurbished and is even open to traffic. It was getting a little late in the day so we rode directly to Charleston where we were staying. On the way home we stayed mostly in KY stopping at the Woolcott and Colville Covered bridges.
