November 2006
Lewis County KY - Cabin Creek Covered Bridge
Cabin Creek Rd
Vanceburg, KY 41179
It was unseasonably warm the entire 2006 Thanksgiving holiday in Greater Cincinnati with highs approaching 70º, and we finally got around to taking advantage on Saturday after Thanksgiving. We decided to start late in the morning and pick up three bridges in Kentucky. We knew we would be out of light by about 5:00 so we didn't goof around getting to our destination. We went through downtown Cincinnati and cruised out Columbia Parkway through California and New Richmond before stopping along the Ohio River in Moscow. We watched an empty barge pass by and decided to get back on the road. We stayed on US52 through Neville, Chilo Rural, and Utopia before we passed by Boudes Ferry which has taken travelers between Ohio and Agusta KY since 1798. In Aberdeen OH we crossed the river into Maysville KY and rode through the east side of town looking for route 10. We went east and south on 10 until we reached Plumville where we turned left and headed east on Springdale Rd. or route 984. This eventually forks into Cabin Creek Road. Having been named after the bridge we knew we were on the right road. The bridge sits about 500 ft south of the new bridge spanning Cabin Creek. It looks like the new road just bypassed the old bridge and an old house just on the west bank of the creek. The bridge is a Multiple Kingpost and Arch spanning 114' and built in 1867. It is fairly rough shape and appears to have been refurbished sometime along the way but it is no longer in action.
