Day Ten – Williston ND to Ashland WI
Miles: 745.6
Elapsed Time: 14:30
We had a pretty big day ahead of us, so we didn’t waste much time getting started. We were flying across the Northern Plains at pretty good clip. We when reached US83 we weren’t convinced we could make Carrington ND on our gas, and we weren’t certain there would be anything in between. So, we decided to run up toward Minot and we thought we would find a gas station without going all the way into town. This was not the case but the detour wasn’t that great. We gassed up and went on our way stopping to take a pic of the Foster County Courthouse in Carrington. Pretty impressive for bing in what seems to be a fairly remote town. On we went to Mayville where we wanted to see the historic buildings associated with Mayville State University. We gassed up in Hillsboro and continued on our way. Our next stop was along MN200 near Lake Itasca where the mighty Mississippi can be jumped across. The stop was nothing more than a small parking lot but we made the best of it. We stopped for gas in Cass Lake and made one more stop along the St. Louis River. By the time we reached Ashland it was already getting late. We wanted to go out and get something to eat. The River Rock Inn was an older style motel but completely remodeled and really super nice. We walked over to the South Shore Brewery where they serve a great beer share their space with the Deep Water Grille. Good food and great beer made the night a good one. We only wished we had arrived to Ashland sooner.
