Germany

I had business in Germany and Steve had some frequent flyer miles burning a hole in his account.  It seemed like a perfect fit.  I had done a little research on previous trips to Germany, and thought if I ever got the chance we should rent bikes and ride around the Fatherland for a long weekend.

We arrived on Friday and started our 3 day ride on Saturday. We rented BMWs and this would be the trip that convinced Steve riding BMWs was not simply just a brand choice but a significant difference and experience and he will likely never go back. The weather was not very cooperative and the only place that didn't look like solid rain was south so we decided to head toward Munich. It was difficult to navigate in 2004 as there was no GPS on the bikes. We only had maps to use and for that reason we stayed fairly close to the Autobahn as we traveled. We first stopped in Wurtzburg and walked around some and grabbed a quick bite of lunch. We jumped on the Autobahn for a time before getting off on some side roads. We stopped in Ingolstadt for a pint and form there it was a short stint to Munich. We were staying in the old part of town at a hotel that was next door to Hofbrauhaus. So we walked next door sat down at the Hofbrauhaus to eat dinner and have a few beers and about 8 hours later we stumbled back to the hotel. The next day we got somewhat of a late start as we nursed ourselves back from the night before and also waited for the weather to clear. Well, the weather didn't clear much but we started out anyway towards Austria. The rain and fog persisted so we didn't go very far as most of the day the visibility was only a couple of miles. We got back to the hotel in Munich and basically re-did the previous night except we decided on sushi rather than pork. On Monday the weather had cleared and we headed north stopping in Heidelberg for some time to walk around and see the sights. Later that day we returned the bikes and headed to Darmstadt where we were staying.

We really didn't do this trip justice. We were not well prepared and the weather was completely crap. We would try again in 2014 having learned our lessons from this trip.
