Day Five – Sturgeon Bay WI to Duluth MN
Miles: 480

We rode about 7 miles to our breakfast spot on WI57. The place was Morning Glory Restaurant and was a good start for us. The ride around the South shore of Green Bay and through the city of Green Bay was rather boring but we made quick timing of it and we reached our first stop around 8:30. Our first stop was Breakwater Park in Oconto. The breakwater was located at the mouth of Oconto River and was drivable out to the end of the breakwater itself which was about a half a mile out into the bay. There was a lot of activity for a weekday morning on the breakwater with people fishing, but we didn't seem to even be noticed. We had some detours to navigate as we got back underway, but we were soon following the Menominee River on WI180. It was an ok Road and probably considered twisty by WI standards but without much view of the river it was fairly boring. We targeted Minnocqua Brewing Company for lunch but when we arrived there it was a long wait for a table so decided not to wait around and we continued on. The town of Minocqua looked like a really nice vacation spot, situated on a peninsula in the middle of Minocqua Lake. Unfortunately we didn't have time to spare so we were on our way. We rode north on US51 and then US2 for 73 miles before stopping at Superior Falls. When we first pulled in we walked down a path to where we thought the falls would be but it looked like a steep descent down to the lake and we didn't really want a strenuous hike at this point in the day. We milled around some, and noticed some other cars in the upper parking lot and realized that was probably where the falls were. We quickly realized this was the place and a short hike got us to a view of the falls. It was definitely worth the walk. We stood around for a few minutes, took some pics and walked back out. On the other side of Ashland we considered staying on US2 and bypassing the route up towards the Apostle Islands, but we saw some road construction signs and thought if we bypass the Islands and then run into detours we would be pissed, so we continued on the route taking WI13 up around the horn that touches on the Apostle Islands. The route wasn't all that special but we had some good views of the Lake on occasion, and there was almost no traffic. We stopped at Meyers Beach which I thought was fairly famous, and indeed I was right as there was a significant amount of traffic in the parking lot and we decided to find a less crowded area. It must be a good place to put in for kayaking as there were several companies of rentals taking people in and out of the area. We continued on WI13 and as we went along we noticed the little roadside parks were all closed. What a bunch of hooey. After we passed by two of them we thought if we see another we will stop, and sure enough along came another and we stopped despite some sign saying closed. Hey, give me a ticket if you must was our thinking, but needless to say we had no issues. It was a nice little roadside park that had a great view of Lake Superior. We targeted the hotel which was situated in Canal Park, but it was no easy feat getting there as many streets were closed for construction. We finally fished our way to the hotel passing the SS William A Ervin freighter. It could carry only about half of what the SS Edmund Fitzgerald could carry which made me wonder how big the Fitzgerald was as this ship was massive. It launched in 1938 and was in service until 1978. It's now a museum but needless to say we did not go through it, although I am almost certain it was closed due to the pandemic. Next door to the hotel was Canal Park Brewing where we had a few pints, had some dinner and enjoyed the nice night. We walked over to the famous lift bridge which is a hallmark of the Duluth skyline to take some pics. The lift bridge was opened in 1905 and has been rehabilitated several times, and as recent as 2009. Duluth was a really good destination for not being a well recognized tourist spot. The Canal Park was really quite nice and we enjoyed ourselves.
