Day Eight – Williamsport to Home
Miles: 550

Having a big day ahead we started early and chose Lucky Strike Diner for breakfast. Unfortunately no one was there to open the place and the person in the building was the night time prep guy. He was very apologetic and offered to cook us something but we politely declined and left $5 for a coffee and a tea. We started out on US220 and rode through downtown Lock Haven but it didn't look all that great so we continued on. We followed PA180 and Alt US220 south jumping on I-99 for to get some miles behind us. We exited on US30 better known as the Lincoln Highway and made a stop at the former site of the SS Grand View Ship Hotel. This historic site has been a Mecca for travelers dating back to the mid-18th century, but once the Lincoln Highway was built it really picked up and the SS Grand View was built in the late 1920s. The original Grand View was a simple block building with no ship reference. There were many modifications to the building over time but it remained very viable until the completion of the nearby PA Turnpike in 1940. It remained a popular local place but most travelers by-passed the Lincoln Highway. Unbelievably the place stayed in business until 2001. There isn't much at the site now, but we stopped and took some pics anyway. The view is still very and good and one can three states. We were thinking about stopping at the Flight 93 memorial but the weather was turning ugly and we were riding through misting rain. We just continued on and ended up stopping in Ohioplyle but rode past the downtown which we had visited before and stopped at Cucumber Falls just outside of the main town. It is a pretty good set of falls and there were people underneath looking like they were having a good time. It wasn't cold but it wasn't all that warm either. Our last formal stop was in Duncan Falls on the Muskinggum River and Lock #9 which is on the South side of the river so it is considered the Philo Lock rather than the Duncan Falls Lock. There was a county worker and sheriff at the lock and they showed us around and provided some history. Duncan Falls sits just south of Janesville and it is there that we picked up US22 and basically rode that all the way home. It was a long day and the weather was far from perfect but all-in-all since this was our worst weather day we had no complaints.
