Day Six – Waynesboro VA to Morgantown WV
Miles: 362

We had planned to go to Weasie's Kitchen for breakfast but it was closed due to the pandemic so our best option was Waffle House. Never terrible but also nothing to write home about. We were in and out pretty quick and on our way. It was another very cold start as the temperature was again in the 30s as we started out. Right out of Waynesboro we immediately jumped on Skyline Drive and headed north. The road was wet from the morning frost and covered in leaves, so needless to say we were riding very cautiously. After an hour or so in the park we were looking for a place to stop but only if there was sun shining. Finally we came upon the Doyles River Overlook. We stopped and soaked in the sun along with a few others who seemed to be setting out on the Appalachian Trial that was nearby. It was still cold but the sun warmed things up nicely. We hadn't been on Skyline drive for some time so it was nice to re-visit. We continued on Skyline Drive but jumped off at US33 to ride down the Spotswood Trail and then after riding north through some wine country we rode back up the mountain on US211 or Lee Highway. This took us down into the town of Luray which is famous for its caverns and sits on the Shenandoah River. Once we crossed the river we climbed up Kennedy Peak on VA675 which was a fairly narrow and unimproved road, but it turned out to provide some great scenery. We stopped at a hairpin turn at the beginning of Kennedy Peak Trailhead. It was in the sun and a perfect stop for us. Back down the other side we had planned to stop at Camp Roosevelt which is an old CCC Camp and I think the first of its kind but of course it was closed. We continued through the valley and past the Elizabeth Furnace recreation area which was also closed and turned right onto VA55 towards Front Royal. This was a slight detour for us as we decided to go into that town for a bite of lunch. We picked the Front Royal Brewing Co and enjoyed some pretty good pub fare. The place had a little bit of a German feeling which felt out of place here but we enjoyed the place. We also walked around Main St a little and read some historical markers on the historical Warren County Courthouse. This town was certainly part of the Civil War in a big way having been captured by Stonewall Jackson at one point in May of 1862. We got back on our route going through Strasburg before stopping at the Capon Lake Whipple Truss Bridge. The bridge was built in 1874 as part of a two span bridge on US50 in Romney across the South branch of the Potomac River. The single span was moved to its current location in 1938 and carried route 16 traffic across the Cacapon River until 1991. We continued on toward our destination in Cumberland and we stopped at the Paw Paw Tunnel trail which we considered walking, but was contemplated our situation where we would arrive to Cumberland fairly early in the evening leaving us with a very big day the next day we decided, very uncharacteristically to call an audible. At the very last minute we decided to continue to ride and stay in Morgantown, vastly cutting our miles for the final day. We had to be creative on our routing and we went back to the old fashioned way of looking at a map, however on a phone, and going point to point. We didn't want to bypass the Ohiopyle Falls area so we routed there taking Farmington=Ohiopyle Rd which turned out to be really nice. The falls and the surround area including the little town of Ohiopyle PA was quite nice, and we marked this as an opportunity for a future stay. The falls were bigger than I had thought and I wished we could have visited the nearby Cumberland Falls and Frank Loyds Wright's Kentuck Knob house but it wasn't to be. We exited the back way to avoid any duplications and back into WV and unfortunately onto I-68 before exiting into Morgantown. We arrived a little late and there wasn't much around so we ordered pizza and ate in the lobby. It was a full day and although it started out cold it ended up being pretty nice with sun nearly all day.
